• The freight industry has its specific terminology, which is tough to decode, especially for a newcomer. To get you the right start, let’s take a look at 10 freight words starting with the letter C.
• 1. Consignor: This can be an individual or firm that gives a consignment to the freight company to be shipped to the buyer (consignee). The consignor is usually the seller and they have legal ownership of the consignment till full payment is released by the buyer.
• 2. Consignee: This is usually the buyer who receives the consignment from the freight company. The consignee can claim ownership of the consignment only after they have paid the agreed amount to the shipper (consignor).
• 3. Cartage: This refers to the transportation of goods by road over short distances. Freight charges related to such transport is also referred to as cartage. This is usually applicable for goods transported within a specific area, town or city.
• 4. Container:These have become the preferred mode of shipment in the freight industry and are widely used across the globe. These come in standard sizes so that they can be seamlessly loaded onto cargo ships, rail cars and trucks. Temperature controlled containers are also available, which are used to transport perishable items.
• 5. Cubic capacity: This is the total loading capacity of a truck, rail car or cargo ship. Cubic capacity may be determined by the load-carrying capacity of the transport vessel or it can be governed by government rules and regulations.
• 6. Common carrier: This is usually a licensed carrier approved by a regulatory body, which caters to shipment of goods from multiple entities. Common carriers operate on fixed routes and have standard rates for their services. These can operate via road, rail or air.
• 7. Consolidated shipment: When there are several small packages from various shippers, they are consolidated together in a single container and delivered to different locations. By choosing consolidated shipment, shippers get to save on shipping costs.
• 8. Classification: This refers to the classification of goods based on various parameters such as density, dimension, value, liability, and ease of handling. The classification is necessary to help freight companies determine appropriate transportation charges for a specific consignment.
• 9. COD: Short for ‘Collect on Delivery’, this is a specialized agreement wherein the freight company is responsible for collecting the price of consignment before delivering it to the consignee. The shipper may have to pay an additional fee to the freight company for COD services.
• 10. Cargo claim: This is a claim made against the freight company for recovering any financial losses arising from damage to shipment during transportation. Lost or stolen goods are also covered under cargo claim. The claim can be made by either the consignor or consignee.
